The Dance of Life by Edvard Munch
In this painting the couples dance (live), they show themselves and do--both individually and as couples--what they are supposed to do: they play their role, they fulfill social expectations.
The couple dancing in the centre is flanked by two figures that await for their turn to dance (or interact) with them: in white, life (children maybe?), what is ahead of them; in black, death, ubiquitous and unavoidable.
In Much's painting, analysts have generally attributed the moon and its reflex in the water to fertility. I disagree. In my opinion, it makes reference to the ephemeral, the circumstantial; in this case it alludes to the fragility of what constitutes our life right now, and the fact that everything will change in the future and will eventually cease to exist.
If you happen to be in Oslo, Norway, you will find this painting the in the National gallery.
