This monochromatic painting by a contemporary artist explores the duality of a military tactic —retreating on one front in order to advance on another— through several visual distortions. The riders are seated backwards, facing opposite the direction of their horses, while the entire image is mirrored in the water below.
In essence, we are seeing an inverted reflection of riders moving backward in a reversed retreat. A tactic meant to confuse and mislead becomes doubly disorienting here, especially since one of the riders holds a polo mallet instead of a weapon. In my view, this painting alludes to how difficult it can be to decipher and truly understand others’ intentions in complex situations —and how close we always are to misinterpreting one another.
This painting is housed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the same city also features other notable works by this artist.
“Avance en retroceso” de Mark Tansey
Esta pintura monocromática de un autor contemporáneo nos presenta la dualidad de una táctica militar —la retirada en un frente para avanzar en otro—, con varios elementos alterados. Los jinetes están sentados al revés, mirando hacia atrás en relación con sus caballos, mientras toda la imagen se refleja en el agua.
En suma, observamos el reflejo invertido de jinetes que cabalgan hacia atrás en una retirada al revés. Una táctica concebida para confundir y desorientar se vuelve aquí doblemente desconcertante, sobre todo porque uno de los jinetes sostiene un taco de polo en lugar de un arma. En mi opinión, esta pintura alude a la dificultad que existe, en muchos casos, para descifrar e interpretar correctamente las intenciones de los demás en acciones complejas, y a lo fácil que resulta malentender al otro.
Esta obra se encuentra en el Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) de Nueva York. El Metropolitan Museum of Art de la misma ciudad también conserva otras obras interesantes de este autor.
