“Deer in the Monastery Garden” by Franz Marc

Another masterpiece by Marc. Using a palette that blends the greens of the landscape with the light, flowers, and the animal itself, the painter creates a scene in which a deer merges seamlessly with its surroundings. The faint moon on the left side of the painting suggests a nocturnal setting. The deer’s posture —alert, startled— is typical of these animals in the wild.

If you happen to be in Munich, Germany, you can find it at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. While you’re there, cross the street to Königsplatz, where, besides admiring the impressive neoclassical buildings, you’ll find museums dedicated to classical antiquity and Greco-Roman sculpture.
