"Attempting the Impossible" by Rene Magritte. Post dedicated to Sofia

This painting by Magritte can be plausibly interpreted in different ways, something relatively common in the work of this artist. In the picture, a painter "creates" a woman in a three-dimensional space, something that could be read (taking the title in to account) as:

1) A man cannot make a woman resemble his idea of what she should be. In her nature and identity, a woman is indomitable, an authentic being, not an accessory tailored to her man needs. While this concept may seem (more or less) obvious, still today well into the 21st century it is easy to find tens of countries populated by billions of people were women are generally relegated to a mere shadow of their male counterparts.

2) A painter, even a highly talented one, cannot capture in a painting the true nature, richness and depth of femininity. The looks of a woman say little to nothing about who she really is, her personality, or her abilities. This, which should be also obvious today, is poorly understood in many countries around the world. A great example are those countries that (while allowing women to work outside of their home), permit employers to ask for pictures to be submitted along with resumes, when they apply for a job.

If you happen to travel to Japan, you will find this painting in the municipal museum in the city of Toyota. You will also find other notable paintings by Gustav Klimt, Edvard Munch and others.

“Intentando lo imposible" de Rene Magritte. Dedicado a Sofia.

Esta obra de Magritte se puede interpretar de varias maneras (algo relativamente común en la pintura de este artista). El pintor en esta obra ¨crea¨ una mujer en un espacio tridimensional, algo que podría interpretarse, en relación al titulo, como:

1) Un hombre no puede hacer que una mujer se parezca a su idea de lo que ella debería ser. En su naturaleza e identidad, la mujer es indomable, un ser autentico, no un accesorio de lo que el hombre quiere que sea. Aunque esto parezca obvio, todavía hoy, en pleno siglo XXI hay decenas de países donde viven billones de personas, donde la mujer es generalmente doblegada y relegada a ser una sombra de su hombre.

2) Un pintor, aunque cuente con todo el talento del mundo, no puede capturar en una pintura la verdadera naturaleza, riqueza y profundidad de la femineidad. El aspecto de una mujer dice poco y nada acerca de quien realmente es, y está generalmente relacionado con su herencia genética y su circunstancias culturales.

Esto, que también debería parecer obvio, es poco entendido en muchos lugares del mundo, ejemplificado por el hecho de que en decenas de países (donde las mujeres pueden trabajar) se les piden que manden una foto, junto con su curriculum, cuando aplican para un trabajo.
