“Horse and Train” by Alex Colville

This 1954 work by a renowned Canadian painter presents a scene in which tragedy is imminent. The horse does not recognize the danger posed by the train. The train engineer, perhaps due to the dim light of the sunset, perhaps because of the monotony of a long, uneventful journey, or perhaps due to the boredom of a plain that has little to offer, fails to perceive the approaching danger.

The calm of the surroundings and the soft evening light give this painting an aura of peace and stillness, which contrasts with the tension of the impending accident. It serves as a reminder that, often, a sudden turn for the worse can happen—even (or especially) at a moment when everything seems calm.
