“Three Women” by Fernand Léger

This painting presents us with the image of three women, their rounded forms distorted in the ways that the artist considered most striking. In my opinion, the fact that their faces are identical suggests that these three women are actually one. The woman on the right, with a flesh-colored body, represents the “real” woman—having tea, reading. The other two reclining figures are versions of herself in more erotic situations. The black feline on the right may also allude to this woman’s character.
