This painting from the early 1900s is a portrait of Amelie, Matisse's wife.
What is unique about this painting? The disjointed elements that compose the image suggest this is a painting that intended to provoke, to get people to talk about it. And effectively, records from the time the painting was first exhibited show that people were generally divided between those that thought it was the work of a genius, and those that thought it was a hoax or a joke.
The controversy centres around the large, amorphous, areas of colour that form the image. Lines are mostly absent, depth is the byproduct of the difference in temperature and tone of the different colours. At the time this painting was presented to the public, the author's approach to both shape and perspective were ground breaking. As it often happens, change is not always well received.
