In this mid-19th century painting, we see Ophelia, one of the characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, singing in the water just before drowning in the river where she fell while picking flowers along the bank. This scene does not appear on stage in the play; it is described in Act IV, Scene VII by Queen Gertrude.

Ophelia’s death is considered one of the most poetic in the history of literature.
