“Forbidden Reproduction” by René Magritte

This work is a reaffirmation of the uniqueness and individuality of each person’s identity and circumstances. The fact that the figure in the painting is not reflected in the mirror is essentially a statement: it cannot be reproduced. In my view, it also refers to a recurring theme in Magritte’s work: the perception of identity. We see others as constructions of our intellect, not in their true essence. A related example is The Lovers.

Notice that the book (at the lower right) is indeed reflected in the mirror. That the book is The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym by Edgar Allan Poe is particularly meaningful: it tells of a great adventure, a unique journey, a significant portion of a young man’s life. The reflection of the book suggests that an individual’s life can be recounted; the absence of the person’s reflection implies that another’s life cannot be lived.

This painting is housed in Rotterdam, Netherlands, at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
