Many books have been written attempting to explain and decipher the meaning of this 1508 painting. Although it is now known as The Tempest, Giorgione did not give it a title at the time. In my view, the subject is an allegory of the many ways humans seek protection and security from the world around them.
The mother caring for her child, the soldier protecting the citizens, and the city in the background offering shelter from the elements, animals, and other humans—all of these are examples of how we safeguard ourselves from our environment and various threats.
If you visit Venice, you can see this work at the Galleria dell’Accademia. Be sure not to miss the works of Veronese, Lotto, and especially Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.
“La Tempestad”, de Giorgione
Se han escrito numerosos libros tratando de explicar y descifrar el significado de esta pintura de 1508. Aunque hoy se la conoce como La Tempestad, Giorgione no le dio título en su momento. En mi opinión, el tema es una alegoría de las múltiples formas en que los seres humanos buscamos protección y seguridad frente a nuestro entorno.
La madre que cuida a su hijo, el soldado que protege a los ciudadanos, la ciudad al fondo brindando resguardo frente a los elementos, los animales y otros humanos: todos estos son ejemplos de cómo nos protegemos del medio ambiente y de diversas amenazas.
Si pasan por Venecia, pueden ver esta obra en la Galleria dell’Accademia. No dejen de admirar también los trabajos de Veronese, Lotto y, sobre todo, el Hombre de Vitruvio de Leonardo da Vinci.
