“Grainstacks" by Claude Monet
The painter created a total of twenty-five works based on the motif of grainstacks, exploring different perspectives, compositions, and gradations of light. This series represents a major step forward for Impressionism, as Monet, through his experiments with light, mist, and varying atmospheric conditions, established a new pictorial approach that captures how light and the environment affect and transform both the subject and its surroundings.
The first of these paintings is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Many other works from this series are held in museums around the world.
