"The West Wind" by Tom Thomson

One of Canada’s great painters, Tom Thomson was primarily interested in the landscapes of the Ontario region, particularly the Great Lakes. His work captured the essence of the natural beauty that defines much of Canada.

The West Wind depicts the first signs of an approaching storm: churning water and a tree bent by the force of the wind. The setting is possibly Lake Cauchon, at the northern edge of Algonquin Park. This painting was found in Thomson’s studio after his tragic death—he drowned in a Canadian lake—and is almost certainly the last work he completed.

In my view, in Thomson’s vision the tree represents ourselves: at the mercy of the forces gathering and breaking around us, yet enduring.

Uno de los grandes pintores canadienses, Tom Thomson se interesó primordialmente por los paisajes de la región de Ontario, en particular los Grandes Lagos. Su obra logró capturar la esencia de la belleza natural que caracteriza a buena parte de Canadá.

El viento del oeste presenta los primeros signos de una tormenta que se aproxima: el agua agitada y el árbol inclinado por la fuerza del viento. El lugar representado es posiblemente el lago Cauchon, en el extremo norte del Parque Algonquin. Esta pintura fue hallada en el estudio de Thomson después de su trágica muerte —se ahogó en un lago de Canadá— y con toda certeza es la última obra en la que trabajó.
