“The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli

One of Botticelli’s great masterpieces. Venus is born from a seashell and is carried toward the shore by the wind Zephyrus, accompanied by one of his nymphs. On the coast, Flora awaits Venus with a tunic to cover her. All of these figures—Venus, Zephyrus, and Flora—reappear in another of Botticelli’s most famous paintings, Primavera, which has also been interpreted on this blog.

This work is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The gallery itself is also a work of art.
