“Mother and Child” by Henry Moore

The theme of mother and child is recurrent in Henry Moore’s sculptural work. This version is particularly striking: the child has transformed into a kind of fierce bird attempting to attack the mother, who partially defends herself by gripping the child by the neck. In this depiction of the mother–child relationship, Moore brings to the forefront its antagonistic and conflictive aspects.

There are several versions of this and other sculptures by Moore based on the mother-and-child motif, some of which can be found at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Courtauld Institute in London, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
