“Life” by Pablo Picasso

This painting, through several allegories, references the typical cycles and stages of human life. The first stage is represented by the figures on the right: a mother and her child. The child will later become one of the members of the couple on the left, while the woman in that couple will, in turn, become the mother on the right (the man points toward the mother with the baby, symbolizing the future of his own partner).

The woman on the left clings to her partner in a particular way, almost hanging from him, likely indicating that the man is responsible for the household’s economic sustenance and that she depends on him.

The two paintings in the background allude to future stages of the couple. The upper image suggests the comfort the couple will provide each other during difficult times, such as economic struggles or mourning a loss. The lower image depicts the end of life, where one member of the couple is left alone. Interestingly, in both background paintings, it is unclear who is the man and who is the woman.
