"The Sleeping Gypsy" by Henri Rousseau
It is not clear what Rousseau intended to convey
with this scene. He described it in a letter with these words: "A nomadic
Black woman playing the mandolin rests with her jug beside her (a vase with water), overcome by fatigue in a deep sleep. A lion happens to pass by, detects
her scent but does not devour her. There is a moonlight effect, very
poetic."
Beyond this cryptic description by the author, for
me, the meaning lies in the tension created by the power dynamic and latent threat represented by the lion, sniffing around, and the sleeping gypsy. The gypsy symbolizes the
artist, alone, with little to nothing (her instrument, water, and clothing),
and the power of authority: menacing, inspecting her in
detail when she least expects it, never resting.

No esta claro que quiso decir Rousseau con esta escena. La gitana representa al artista, unipersonal, con poco y nada (su instrumento, agua y ropa) y el poder del gobierno, amenazante, desconfiado, inspeccionándola en detalle cuando ella menos lo sospecha, nunca descansando.
