Girls on the Bridge by Edvard Munch
This painting shows three young ladies in transition. Adolescence is represented by the bridge, half-way between childhood and adult life. As they become adults some will get married, others will go into a convent as nuns (at the time of this painting, 1890, that was a common option).
The water they look at from the bridge represents the passing time, the destiny. In that water, the girls try to elucidate what the future holds for them. The fact that the water looks calm probably represents that time passes slowly for the girls, which makes it difficult to "guess" their future.
There are dozens of variations and versions of this theme in Munch's work. In other versions (see online) the position of the girls and their actions change notably. See Example 1 o Example 2

Esta obra presenta tres jóvenes que están en transición (el puente) a mitad de camino entre la adolescencia y la vida de adultas, en las cuales unas se casaran y otras iran a un convento (esta pintura es de fines del 1800). El agua al cual se asoman representa el tiempo que corre, el destino. En esa agua las jóvenes tratan de entrever que les depara el futuro. El hecho de que el agua aparezca calma quizás represente que el tiempo pasa con lentitud, lo que hace dificultoso “adivinar” cual será el futuro de estas jóvenes. Hay decenas de variaciones de este tema en la pintura de Munch.
En otras versiones (vean online) la posición y acciones de las jóvenes cambia notablemente, interesante para interpretar. Ver Ejemplo 1 o Ejemplo 2
