“Girls on the Bridge” by Edvard Munch

This painting depicts three young women in a state of transition. Adolescence is symbolized by the bridge, a midpoint between childhood and adulthood. As they mature, some will marry, while others may enter a convent as nuns—a common option at the time (1890).

The water they gaze at from the bridge represents the passage of time and destiny. In its calm surface, the girls attempt to discern what the future holds for them. The serene quality of the water may suggest that time seems to move slowly for them, making it difficult to “predict” their future.

Munch explored this theme in dozens of variations and versions. In other versions, the girls’ positions and actions change significantly.
