"Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion" by Francis Bacon

The crucifixion is an atrocious act that awakens deep emotions. Each of the three figures in this triptych (three paintings) represents feelings associated with the crucifixion. The figure in the left painting is overwhelmed by the happening; the figure in the center is horrified; the one at the right expresses pain and desperation. The crucifixion itself is not included in the paintings, only the feelings that the event generates, this is possibly the most interesting aspect of these paintings.

If one pays attention to the perspective of the room in the paintings, which is revealed by the walls, it is easy to see that the three figures surround the viewer in a triangle. The figures are at the base of our crucifixion, which is our own life. The horror and the pain expressed by the figures is directed to our own existence. 

If you happen to be in London, England, you will find these paintings in the Tate Gallery (but only if you are lucky, these paintings travel a lot as part of special exhibits and are also loaned to other galleries around the world).

“Tres estudios de figuras al pie de una crucifixión” de Francis Bacon.

La crucifixión es un suceso atroz que despierta profundas emociones. Cada una de las tres figuras en este tríptico (tres cuadros) representa sentimientos asociados a la crucifixión. La figura de la izquierda esta agobiada por el peso del suceso, la del centro es el horror, la de la derecha es el dolor y la desesperacion. La crucifixión en si misma no aparece en este cuadro, solo los sentimientos que el evento genera; este aspecto es el mas interesante.

Si uno presta atención a la perspectiva de la habitación, que es revelada por las paredes en cada pintura, veremos que las tres figuras rodean al espectador en un triangulo. Las figuras están al pie de nuestra crucifixión, que es nuestra vida. El peso, el horror y el dolor están asociados a nuestra existencia.
