Prostitute before her mirror by George Rouault


This painting from 1906 presents the contrast between what we want others to see and what shows.

First, the woman in front of the mirror sees in her reflected image a body that is more curvaceous and younger than her own. Given her profession, this distortion in the perception of reality alludes to the hope she puts in the physical beauty she is losing with the passage of time.

Another interesting aspect is the sad expression of the woman in the image reflected in the mirror, it is not the face of the "real" woman, whose expression is more neutral, hiding her sadness.

The whole scene alludes to the contradictions inherent to the fact that our perception of reality is conditioned by what others (and ourselves) want to see and show. Often, the real feelings and intentions are not apparent.

Esta obra pintada en 1906 presenta el contraste entre la realidad versus lo que dejamos ver o queremos ver. 

Primero, la mujer frente al espejo ve en su imagen reflejada un cuerpo más esbelto y curvaceo que el que realmente tiene. Dada su profesión, esta distorsión en la percepción de la realidad alude a la esperanza que deposita en la belleza que casi ya no tiene.

El segundo aspecto es que la expresión de tristeza en el espejo, particularmente la posición de la boca, no es la expresión de la mujer en la realidad (su expresión parece ser mas neutra y oculta esa tristeza).

La escena alude a las contradicciones inherentes al hecho de que nuestra percepción esta generalmente condicionada por lo que queremos ver o mostrar. Muchas veces la realidad no es aparente.
