“Prostitute Before Her Mirror” by Georges Rouault
This 1906 painting highlights the contrast between what we want others to see and what is actually revealed.
The woman in front of the mirror sees a reflection of herself that is more youthful and curvaceous than her real body. Given her profession, this distorted perception alludes to the hope she invests in her physical beauty, which is gradually fading over time.
Another notable detail is the sad expression of the reflected image. It differs from the real woman’s face, which is more neutral, concealing her inner sadness.
The entire scene reflects the contradictions inherent in how our perception of reality is shaped by what we—and others—want to see. Often, true feelings and intentions remain hidden beneath the surface.
