"The West Wind" by Tom Thomson (“El Viento del Oeste”)

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

One of Canada’s great painters, Tom Thomson was primarily interested in the landscapes of the Ontario region, particularly the Great Lakes. His work captured the essence of the natural beauty that defines much of Canada.

The West Wind depicts the first signs of an approaching storm: churning water and a tree bent by the force of the wind. The setting is possibly Lake Cauchon, at the northern edge of Algonquin Park. This painting was found in Thomson’s studio after his tragic death—he drowned in a Canadian lake—and is almost certainly the last work he completed.

In my view, in Thomson’s vision the tree represents ourselves: at the mercy of the forces gathering and breaking around us, yet enduring.

If you are in Toronto, you can see this work at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Grainstacks" by Claude Monet

The painter created a total of twenty-five works based on the motif of grainstacks, exploring different perspectives, compositions, and gradations of light. This series represents a major step forward for Impressionism, as Monet, through his experiments with light, mist, and varying atmospheric conditions, established a new pictorial approach that captures how light and the environment affect and transform both the subject and its surroundings.

The first of these paintings is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Many other works from this series are held in museums around the world.

“The Colossus" by Francisco de Goya (“El Coloso”)

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

The Colossus” by Francisco de Goya

In this 1808 painting, the scene is dominated by a giant, the colossus, who advances aggressively, trampling everything in his path. At the feet of the colossus, the villagers—peasants and their livestock—flee in terror.

This work belongs to the period when Napoleon was advancing across Europe. The colossus represents Napoleon and his army, while the mountains symbolize the Pyrenees, the border between Spain and France. The villagers, mostly rural Spaniards, appear helpless in the face of this overwhelming threat.

If you visit Madrid, you can see this painting at the Prado Museum, which also houses many other masterpieces, including Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez.

“The Tempest” by Giorgione (“La Tempestad”)

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

“The Tempest” by Giorgione

Many books have been written attempting to explain and decipher the meaning of this 1508 painting. Although it is now known as The Tempest, Giorgione did not give it a title at the time. In my view, the subject is an allegory of the many ways humans seek protection and security from the world around them.

The mother caring for her child, the soldier protecting the citizens, and the city in the background offering shelter from the elements, animals, and other humans—all of these are examples of how we safeguard ourselves from our environment and various threats.

If you visit Venice, you can see this work at the Galleria dell’Accademia. Be sure not to miss the works of Veronese, Lotto, and especially Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

“Primavera (Spring)” by Sandro Botticelli

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

“Primavera (Spring)” by Sandro Botticelli

A classic among classics. This painting is an allegory of the forces unleashed with the arrival of spring.

The central figure is Venus, the goddess of love, but the action unfolds in the events surrounding her. The three female figures on the left, known as the Three Graces, play a key role in the composition, particularly the one looking at the man on the left (Mercury), while Cupid aims his arrow. This allegory of attraction between the sexes is one of the elements Botticelli associates with the arrival of spring.

Another part of the action occurs on the right, where the god of the winds, Zephyr, bends the trees with his force and carries away one of the nymphs (Chloris), who will later become Flora, the pregnant woman to the right of Venus. Flora represents one of the central forces of spring.

An interesting fact: experts have identified over 500 varieties of flowers and plants in this painting.

If you visit Florence, you can see it at the Uffizi Gallery, where it is displayed alongside other masterpieces by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and many more.

“The Sick Child” by Edvard Munch (“La Niña Enferma”)

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

“The Sick Child” by Edvard Munch

This painting is deeply tragic and emotional. The scene depicts a convalescent child and her mother, weighed down by the severity of the illness and the impending sorrow of her daughter’s likely passing.

In my view, the central gesture dominating the scene is the child’s expression and posture, which in some way seems to attempt to console her mother in the midst of despair. Parents will likely recognize many of these feelings. One does not need to have had a seriously ill child to understand the anguish experienced during a child’s convalescence.

If you visit Oslo, Norway, you can see this work at the National Gallery. After experiencing this painting, you can counterbalance its emotional weight with the beauty of Johan Christian Dahl’s landscapes.

“Peasant Wedding” by Pieter Bruegel (“Boda de campesinos”)

Spanish translation below - Traduccción al español mas abajo

“Peasant Wedding” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

This 1567 painting depicts a scene from the everyday life of peasants through the celebration of a wedding. It is important to note that, at that time, most paintings focused on nobles, religious scenes, or mythological subjects.

The scene shows the meal during the celebration. The fact that it is an oatmeal soup highlights the scarcity experienced by the peasants. The eagerness with which some figures wait for their portion or eat is striking.

The painter’s perspective is critical of the social conditions of peasants at the time. The extreme simplicity of the barn, the food, and the clothing reflects a context of poverty and modesty.

If you visit Vienna, you can see this work at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. A related work by the same artist is The Peasant Wedding Dance, which is housed at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
